Palau notches up preparedness plan for swine flu

Health Minister Dr. Stevenson Kuartei said that there is a need to secure personal protective equipment for border control and moving to Phase IV intensity as declared by the World Health Organization.

The task force recommended immunization implementation and a travel alert in affected areas especially in Southern part of the United States and Mexico.The task force has already declared a Public Health alert and is ready to declare a public health or national emergency if there is a suspected case.The task force also recommended that there is a need for a storage place for a stockpile from the Center For Disease Control (CDC).Screening should also be made in at airport and seaport.Palau should also have a ready care site or alternative site.The task force will also be alerting embassies in Palau regarding the efforts.Swine flu has symptoms nearly identical to regular flu — fever, cough and sore throat — and spreads like regular flu   — when people cough or sneeze. People with flu symptoms are advised to stay at home, wash their hands and cover their sneezes.Kuartei said the task force has briefed President Toribiong on the alert.There are over 100 killed in Mexico by the disease and the US reported one death from swine flu.
