Palau President Whipps anticipates minimal impact on Palau under Trump administration

KOROR (Island Times/Pacnews) — President Surangel Whipps Jr. does not expect substantial changes to Palau’s relationship with the United States under the administration of President Donald Trump.

While acknowledging the potential for shifts in U.S policy, Whipps suggests Palau’s existing ties and aid arrangements with the U.S will likely remain stable under the Compact of Free Association.

“Federal assistance will continue under COFA, though we should stay aware that some programs could face cuts,” Whipps said, referencing the Republican-led push to reduce certain federal grants, including the food assistance program.

“The Trump administration views some programs as too costly, which could impact federal support for health and education programs in Palau,” he added.

Whipps also touched on potential U.S military plans involving Palau, underscoring that the Trump administration has emphasized military readiness and expansion. Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper reinforced U.S priorities to strengthen military capabilities and strategic flexibility in the Pacific, which could mean ongoing investments in Palau’s ports and airports, even though no specific plans for a military base have been confirmed.

“The U.S wants flexibility and preparedness in the region, so upgrading our infrastructure remains a priority for them,” Whipps said.

Another critical area of Trump’s foreign policy involves countering China’s influence in the Pacific. Whipps observed that Trump’s administration has increased attention on China’s growing presence, suggesting that the U.S may take a more active role in the region.

“Republicans and Democrats alike support us, but now more than ever, it’s essential for Palau to stay engaged with the U.S Congress and executive branch,” Whipps stated, adding that this collaboration could encourage greater U.S. investment in the Pacific.

Whipps suggests, though, that Palau’s request for funding a new hospital, which falls outside the COFA agreement, may face hurdles.
