The ASVAB, administered by the United States Military Entrance Processing Command, is used to qualify students for enlistment in the United States armed forces. The test is given to more than 14,000 schools and Military Entrance Processing Stations worldwide and is developed and maintained by the Department of Defense.
“The ASVAB is good for all services,” Master Seargent Elmer Pagaragan of the Marine Corps Recruitment said in an interview. “Most of the time, we just help administer the test at the same time we recruit.”
Pagaragan has been coming to Palau twice a year since 2008 to recruit individuals who are interested to join the Marines.
“We get to recruit five to six people a year. It’s a good number for Palau,” he said. He added that they also recruit in Guam, Korea, the Philippines, Japan and Saipan.
The passing score for ASVAB, according to Pagaragan is 31 percent Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT), but he said for the Marines they are looking for students who will get 50 percent and above.
“Recruiting is finding good kids,” he said. “We want them to score higher.”
The results will come out in a couple of weeks.
