But he said he will not use the Senate seat he won recently as a “stepping stone” to the presidency.
Chin topped a seven-man field in winning the special Senate election last Feb. 15.
“I will focus on what I could do as a legislator to help my country and its people,” he said.
“I will not use the position to promote any plan to seek the highest post in the country,” the former vice president added.
Chin ran for president in 2008 and topped the primary, but he narrowly lost to Johnson Toribiong in the runoff.
If Chin runs for president, he could face another formidable opponent besides Toribiong.
Also said to be interested in seeking the post is former president and incumbent Sen. Tommy Remengesau Jr. who was Palau’s chief executive from 2000-2008.
Palau’s Constitution bars the president from serving more than two consecutive terms.
Chin served as Remengesau’s vice president from 2004 to 2008.
Toribiong has indicated that he will seek a second term.
