PAWS seeks new director

“Serving as the Director has been an opportunity of a lifetime to learn about Palau, its institutions, fundraising, international organizations, capacity building, and animal health,” Ms. Lowson explained. “It’s a lot of work, but very rewarding.”

Ms. Lowson was Senior Legal Counsel at the Koror State Government from 2002 to 2006, and helped to establish the animal health program in Koror State and Palau. After her contract with the government finished, she was asked to join the PAWS Board. At the same time she assumed the Director position, which is a non-paid, volunteer position. In her capacity as legal counsel and PAWS Director, Ms. Lowson obtained funds and assistance to hire a veterinarian, train local staff, build an animal shelter, undertake educational outreach programs, and purchase clinical and laboratory equipment. PAWS now has ties with international organizations such as World Society for the Protection of Animals, World Vet Society, Secretariat of the Pacific Community, U.S. Humane Society, and Vets Without Borders. It also receives regular support in the form of training programs, educational materials, invitations to conferences, and ongoing assistance from its international partners. The Director’s position would include maintaining relationships and continuing programs with these overseas organizations. Locally, it would involve liaising with Koror State and Palau National Government agencies, such as the invasive species (macaque) eradication program managed by Dr Joel Miles, and attending the Avian Influenza Task Force meetings.  One of PAWS primary goals is to expand its public education and outreach program, in the form of school visits, radio and TV ads and community visits, and continuing to produce the annual Palau Dog Show.  “For someone interested in taking charge of a program, relationship building, and international networking, the possibilities are really endless.” Ms. Lowson concluded. “If you’ve got the time and want the experience, this is an opportunity that you shouldn’t pass up.”Individuals interested in PAWS board membership, directorship, or other volunteer opportunities can call Lori Colin ([email protected]) at 488-5255 or Sherman Sato at the Animal Shelter at 488-5645.
