Power outage disrupts first day of school in Angaur

A week prior to the opening of classes, the island experienced power outage due to generator breakdown. Although the power has been restored last Friday after the Palau Public Utilities Corporation installed a new generator on the island, the power was off again on Monday morning.

“We had problems with the power. It was on and off since last week,” Kasiano said. “On Monday, we had no power in the morning.”

Kasiano said they couldn’t use the toilets because there was no water. “So we had to use the outhouses. We also couldn’t use our computer laboratories, and we had no communications with the head office in Koror.”

She said the power, however, has been restored in the afternoon, and everything went back to normal.

“It was a relief for everyone when the power went back on in the afternoon,” Kasiano added. “The kids had already gotten used to it because we didn’t have power for the whole week last week.”

Kasiano added that so far there has been no power outage since then.

Angaur Elementary School has 27 students, a normal number of enrollees for a population of 200.

“We had 23 students registered last year,” Kasiano said. “Hopefully, it will increase every year.”
