PSS may switch to another platform for virtual meetings

ACTING Education Commissioner Eric Magofna on Monday said the Public School System is considering switching to a different platform to accommodate more parents and stakeholders whenever the Board of Education holds virtual meetings.

“After the last [virtual] BOE meeting, we noticed that there were a lot of parents and stakeholders that tried to get in,” Magofna said, adding that not all of them were able to join the virtual conference.

“We are currently looking at it to change the platform to Zoom or we can use the PSS Blackboard platform in the future whenever we anticipate more participants,” he said.

To comply with social distancing and other health protocols, the BOE has been using Google Meet to conduct meetings.

On Friday, the BOE held a special meeting to decide on a date for the resumption of face-to-face learning in public schools.

The BOE decided to hold the meeting through its Facebook account.

More devices

With the BOE’s decision to continue online learning until Nov. 29, PSS is expecting an additional 5,000 MiFi devices for students.

“As we are all aware, the wear and tear on devices will happen and there’s always a need for replacements,” Magofna said.

When PSS first launched online learning last year, it distributed MiFi devices to students who had no internet connection at home.

“We will continue to upgrade the necessary devices for all our students to make sure online learning is happening,” Magofna said.
