RAMON “RB” Camacho said amid rising prices of commodities, “we got to start making use of these two major resources,” referring to land and ocean.
Ramon “RB” Camacho speaks to the bottom-fishing workshop participants in Dandan on Friday.
An independent candidate for Saipan mayor, Camacho told participants of a bottom-fishing workshop in Dandan on Friday that inflation is a “reality” on island.
But when “we combine these two resources, we might not need to rely on imported goods — with fishing and farming we can survive,” he added.
According to Camacho, the community must come up with a new industry that is sustainable.
“How many industries do we have here now? Tourism? Not really moving probably, and it’s going to take two to three years to get it moving again. Second industry, casino. Casino is not moving…it’s not even standing on its feet, it’s on its knees, that’s why we have to consider and create a local industry that is sustainable.”
The Committee to elect RB Camacho co-sponsored the bottom-fishing workshop conducted by Lino S. Tenorio & Associates and businessman/fisherman Anthony Guerrero in Dandan on Friday.
Other sponsors included Mobil Gas Station Middle Road, Fishing Tackle, and JP World Corporation.
Important information
In a separate interview, Lino Tenorio of Lino S. Tenorio & Associates said the bottom-fishing workshop on Friday was for individuals who are 16 years old and above.
“We encourage the younger generation and other adults to come and attend the next workshop,” he said. “We provide very important information that they can use in improving their fishing techniques. The novice or beginners will learn how to be good fishermen or fisherwomen.”
Tenorio said they also conduct workshops for the “advanced” fishermen/fisherwomen.
Some of their participants have acquired boats and fishing accessories and started their own fishing business while others fish for fun and recreation, he added.
Tenorio said not a lot of expert fishermen are willing to share their knowledge and skills in fishing.
“Not us. We believe that because of our years of experience, there’s nothing better than to share our knowledge with the younger generation, and to make fishing a part of their life,” he added.
“They can fish to make a living, and some of them are already going out there to catch fish to help put food on the table or make extra money — it’s a win-win situation no matter what, Tenorio said as he thanked the sponsors for making the workshops possible.
He said each workshop includes classroom instruction and hands-on experience,
“We take the participants out on a boat and we demonstrate how to properly drop the rig, pick up the rig…or what type of fish to catch, at what specific time and specific depth — it’s a great opportunity for the participants,” Tenorio said.
He added that their next bottom-fishing workshop will be held at the Garapan Fishing Base in mid-July. More details will be announced soon.
Since 2017, Tenorio said over 300 have participated in their bottom-fishing workshops.
