Renovations finally begin on historic Humåtak school site

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — Renovations to F.Q. Sanchez Elementary School in Humåtak have commenced, nearly two years after it was designated as one of the nation’s 11 most endangered historic places.

On Monday, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to mark the beginning of renovation to the historically protected site.

“I’m so happy that it’s going to be renovated and the people of Humåtak will know that we have a new school, but it’s not a new school. We are going to make the people decide what’s it going to be,” Humåtak Mayor Johnny Quinata said.

Built in 1953 and designed by Viennese architect Richard Neutra, F.Q. Sanchez Elementary School was Humåtak’s only school until it closed in 2011.

The renovations will breathe new life into the site, where there are several ideas on the table for its use. Officials shared that it could be used as a charter school, a senior citizens center, a museum, a cafe and even a place to house the Humåtak mayor’s office.

Public Law 36-82 provides $3.5 million in funding toward the rehabilitation of the school.
