PRECINCT 3 Rep. Corina L. Magofna is running as an independent candidate in this year’s election.
In a statement on Thursday, Magofna, who was elected as a Democrat in the special election in October said:
“As I look forward to continue providing our precinct and Commonwealth with meaningful legislation, bringing to the table my vast experience and a strong background in accounting and finance, being your voice of reason, and my ability to work with all members of the Legislature, and with much deliberation, I have decided to run for office as an independent this coming November election and I humbly ask for your continued support.”
She said she feels she must focus on working for the people of Precinct 3, “and although my party affiliation may have changed…my heart and commitment to serve our people remains the same, stout, strong, and unwavering.”
Magofna said she made her decision “after many deep and lengthy conversations and discussions with family members, friends and most importantly, my constituents.”
“This was not an easy decision to make, but I had to ask myself who elected me into office and why I decided to be a public servant in the first place. A simple answer to a simple question is, I did it to help our people and not for any particular party. My loyalty is to the people,” she added.
Magofna filled the seat of the late Republican Rep. Ivan Blanco who passed away in July.
During the last five months of working as a Precinct 3 representative, Magofna said: “I have contributed positively to highlight our community’s concerns about transparency, fairness, and ongoing oversight with regard to taxpayer funds (local and federal).”
In addition, she said, “I have supported cross-aisle legislation that has positively impacted our community and I hope that I have earned your trust and served you well. I thank you all for believing in me to represent you and be your voice in [the House]. I fervently believe that I have worked diligently for your and our community’s best interest.”
She added, “I want you all to know the important message that matters most to me. I am still the Corina that you have voted for to public office, I am still the same person with the same principles and commitment to every one of you. I have no qualms with my fellow Democratic colleagues. I wholeheartedly wish them all the best, after all, we are all striving for fairness and equality. No ‘pay to play’ politics, no sweetheart deals, and no special contracts under the disguise of an emergency need.”
Magofna said her door will always be open and she hopes that she “may once again be afforded by the people of the Commonwealth the opportunity to continue to serve their best interests in the Legislature together.”
