Rota delegation OKs funds for student scholarships, housing assistance

THE Rota Legislative Delegation has passed a local bill to appropriate $24,500 from a reserve account to the Rota Municipal Scholarship Foundation for student scholarships and housing assistance.

Authored by Rep. Donald M. Manglona, House Local Bill 22-39 would appropriate these funds from the Rota Municipal Scholarship Foundation Reserve, specifically under Business Unit 2301. The expenditure authority is the foundation board chair.

Initially, the bill, which was pre-filed on Oct. 14, 2022, intended to appropriate $50,000. Manglona amended this amount during a delegation session, following a recent fund status report from the Department of Finance.

During the public comments portion of the delegation session, Ivan T. Mereb Jr. of the scholarship foundation board noted that the Rota mayor was the expenditure authority for previous accounts.

“I thank the delegation for giving us the appropriation for our students,” Mereb said. “We thank the delegation for always providing its full support…[and] for your hard work and commitment to our students.”

The bill now heads to the governor’s desk.
