ALTHOUGH a backup generator was still on its way to Rota, the CNMI Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management was able to provide a portable generator for the Rota Health Center’s Emergency Room, said Ike Mendiola, media specialist at the mayor’s office.
He said under the leadership of Mayor Aubry Hocog, Rota had been preparing for Typhoon Mawar since Friday.
Mawar became a super typhoon as it approached Guam Tuesday. Rota is about 57 miles away from Guam.
Mendiola said transportation continues to be one of the main challenges that Rota is experiencing.
But he said they are already preparing for the aftermath of the typhoon, adding that a local vendor is ready to provide the municipal government with heavy equipment that will assist in removing typhoon debris from the roads.
As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, the Dr. Rita Hocog Inos Jr.-Sr. High School shelter on Rota was deactivated.
According to the mayor’s office, “Rota will divert all resources to the Office of the Aging Center shelter. Therefore, we highly encourage all residents who are seeking protection to please make their way to the designated shelter site.”
As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, Mayor Aubry Hocog said the shelter was already prepared and a transportation system was in place.
She said her office had been in constant communication with community members of Rota.
She encouraged them to be prepared and to not take the typhoon lightly.
