Saipan Mayor’s Office to turn former Kobler Field into driving training ground

THE former Kobler Field in Koblerville, which has been turned into an illegal dumping site, will soon be transformed into a driving training ground, Saipan Mayor Ramon “RB” Camacho told Variety in an interview.

“We’re just waiting for the approval [of the regulatory agencies] and as soon as all the paperwork is completed, we will start clearing the place,” he added.

He said the site is ideal for training mayor’s office personnel who operate heavy equipment such as tractors and trucks.

“It is important for our employees to get hands-on experience on the field before they start working in the real world,” he added.

He said private construction companies and other government agencies can also conduct vehicle driving lessons in the area.

As for the illegal dumping at the former Kobler Field, Camacho said, “People should work together to make our environment clean and not turn public areas into dumping sites.”

In a separate interview, Ernie Lacorte, who has been residing on Saipan since 1987, said it is a good plan to designate the area as a driving training ground.

A retired former high ranking officer in a private company, Lacorte now teaches driving lessons.

“We never really have a place to practice. [But] this is the best place to practice since there are no vehicles here,” he said, referring to the former World War II airfield.

Lacorte is also encouraging community members not to dump their household trash into vacant lots.

“We have to be disciplined and know what is right and wrong. It is proper to put your trash in a plastic bag and throw it in the proper dumping site,” he added.
