Senate bill wants change from ounces to liters in taxes computation

Senate Bill 8-150 earlier introduced by Sen. Regis Akitaya does not seek to increase the import tax but rather change the measure system from ounce to liter.

The bill proposes that the new system to be followed, when it is approved that it will be $1.01 per liter for beers and $10.14 per liter for liquors. The current import tax for beers is $0. 03 per ounces.

Akitaya’s bill is proposed an additional excise tax and ad valorem tax on certain items on top of the import tax already being imposed.

An increase in taxes on tobacco, alcohol, petroleum , canned goods, car parts and water bottles were proposed to help pay for the new health care insurance scheme, minimum wage, and the disability fund, last week.

Sen. Regis Akitaya in his Senate Bill 8-150 if approved will mean that a can of beer could cost at least $2.

The proposal added that canned beef and pork will be imposed with an additional 10 percent ad valorem tax.

Tobacco products meanwhile will have an additional tax of $2 per a package of cigarettes, one package of cigar and an ounce of loose tobacco.
