Senate to act on Torres nominees

THE Senate will act on the pending nominations made by outgoing Gov. Ralph DLG Torres once Senate President Jude U. Hofschneider schedules a session, Sen. Frank Q. Cruz said.

Cruz, who chairs the Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Governmental Investigations, said they “are done with the required due process.”

On Dec. 13, the EAGI held a public hearing on the governor’s nomination of Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. dentist Angela C. Sabino to the Healthcare Professions Licensing Board.

On the next day, the committee conducted public hearings for the nomination of Tinian Mayor’s Office Chief of Staff Allen Michael Perez to the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board,  and for the nomination of former Karidat protection advocacy program administrator Remedios Sablan to the Commonwealth Election Commission.

Variety was told that certain members of the incoming administration’s transition team are “concerned about the rash of inexplicable new appointments or nominations” to government boards and commissions. They also find it “disturbing” that “actions have been initiated leading to the confirmation” of the nominees.

They believe that “there is no justification to deviate from a long-held, honored and respected tradition and practice in which courtesy and grace are the norms extended to an incoming administration.”

The new governor, Arnold I. Palacios, will be sworn in on Jan. 9, 2023.
