Southern health center to open through storm, public advised to stay clear of ocean

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The Department of Public Health and Social Services Southern Region Community Health Center at Inalåhan will open at 6 p.m. tonight and will remain open through the duration of Tropical Storm Bolaven, a release from the Joint Information Center stated.

“DPHSS reminds the community that if you are experiencing a life-threatening condition to please contact 911,” the release added.

Pre-operational inspection appointments that were scheduled for Monday with the Division of Environmental Health at DPHSS were cancelled, and applicants will be contacted by the division to reschedule when operations resume normally, according to the JIC.

“For clearances for business licenses and permits, the Business License and Permit Center (BLPC) is currently closed. DEH will resume the processing of clearances once BLPC reopens,” the JIC release stated.

“Once BLPC resumes normal operations, a DEH representative will be available on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for accepting new sanitary permit applications and for the processing of clearances,” the release added.

In addition to updates for DPHSS, the JIC stated on behalf of the Guam Fire Department that patients requiring constant supplemental oxygen at home are urged to ensure that they have filled backup cylinders to last the duration of the storm. Those with powered units should also have an alternative source of oxygen available that does not require electricity, in case of power outages, the JIC release stated.

Residents and visitors are also cautioned against engaging in any kind of water related activities during the storm’s approach and passing. The public is advised to steer clear of the ocean as hazardous sea conditions are being whipped up by Bolaven.

“Residents and visitors are also advised against venturing along trails close to the water or shoreline, as high surf can knock a person down and sweep them off beaches and rocks. These waves can be deadly, even for the most experienced swimmers,” the JIC release stated.

“Before and during the storm, rescue personnel may not be able to respond due to deteriorating weather conditions. Resources such as boats, jet skis, and aircraft normally involved in search and rescue operations may be secured when conditions become too dangerous,” the release added.
