SP appointee to be submitted Aug.

Remengesau told reporters during his weekly press conference that he will forward the name of his choice next month to the Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK).

The position was vacant after former Special Prosecutor Everett Walton in March resigned to accept a new job in Hawaii.

The president said , so far there two applicants for the position and they are lawyers that are non-citizen but are working in Palau.

The president said he will be asking the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) to make a recommendation.

The president added that he is yet to review the applications and is still awaiting other names from the AGO.

He said that he hopes that the AGO will submit several names for his review.

Remengesau earlier said he prefer a foreigner to occupy the post to avoid biases in the performance of his duties.

Walton has been in Palau since January 2000, initially as assistant Special Prosecutor and was appointed as Special Prosecutor since March 2001.

Walton is known for cases against government officials for misuse of public funds.
