State of the Republic Address this Monday

This is the second time since he assumed office that Toribiong will speak before the members of the Olbiil Era Kelulau at the Senate chambers in Melekeok at 10 a.m.

The address will cover the president’s vision to address the many critical challenges Palau faces at home.

The address was supposed to be scheduled on April 25 but because it falls on a Sunday, it was moved to Monday.

In his address Toribiong will also be reporting to the nation the status of the economy and the nation since his installation as a chief executive.

During Toribiong’s 100 days in office, he said that the reactivation of the Compact of Free Association review between the United States and Palau was one of his biggest achievements since he assumed presidency.

In his first State of the Republic Address in 2009 or three months after he assumed the presidency, Toribiong said the State of the Republic is ” precarious but he is upbeat that under his administration the state of the country ” is on the way to full recovery.”

In his address the president said that when he assumed the presidency, he had inherited problems which include the lack of a budget, massive budgetary shortfall, no meaningful progress in the Compact funding review with the United States and a significant reduction in the local tax revenue.

Toribiong will then fly the next day to Washington D.C. to attend the memorial serviceof the U.S. fallen soldiers whose remains were found in Palau.

He is also set to meet key members of the U.S. Congress to discuss the Compact economic assistance which is yet to be approved by lawmakers.
