The Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Taiwan President Ma Ying –jeou is planning to travel to the South Pacific in October to attend the Taiwan –South Pacific leaders summit in the Solomon Islands and that during that trip, the leader may also visit Palau.
According to the internet news, Ma will be accompanied by his wide and that the entourage are tentatively scheduled to depart from Taiwan on Oct. 17 and return on Oct. 22.Taiwan has six diplomatic allies in the South Pacific region, including the Solomon Islands, the Marshall Islands, Palau, Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu.At the summit, Ma will be joined by Toribiong from Palau and the head of States in the Marshall Islands, Nauru, the Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Tuvalu.The summit is scheduled on Oct. 20 in the Solomon Islands, according to Taiwan news.The first summit was held in Palau in 2006. It was attended by former Taiwan President Chen Shu-bien.The agenda of the summit may include the recent global financial crisis, climate change, fishery resources, alternative energy, and cooperation in the fields of medicine, agriculture and fisheries.This is the first time that Ma will visit the South Pacific since he took office in 2008.
