FESTIVALGOERS had the opportunity to participate in multiple competitions at the Tinian Beef, Beer, and Bands Festival over the weekend, including the first annual Beer Olympics.
Three teams of five individuals competed for the $1,000 cash prize by going through an obstacle course after drinking beer.
Two members of each team kicked off the competition by drinking a can of beer through a straw, and after turning their empty beer can upside down, they ran to a designated area for the dizzy bat challenge where they spun around a baseball bat five times.
They then had to run around tiny kindergarten chairs before tagging their remaining three teammates who then executed the next segment of the competition: beer pong, but with a twist.
Instead of the traditional beer pong game, the three remaining teammates had to bounce ping-pong balls into six cups of water.
Once completed, all five teammates ran to a designated area for the flip cup challenge in which they had to each chug a can of beer and flip a cup on the edge of a table.
The final stretch was an old-fashioned game of cornhole where two teammates had to throw three hacky sacks into a cornhole.
Team Toru from Tinian came in first place, winning the $1,000 cash prize. Consolation prizes were given to the other two teams.
Top Chef
The festival also hosted the Tinian Top Chef Competition, with fresh Tinian beef as the key ingredient.
D’Chef’s Kitchen from Saipan, JC Café from Tinian, and Kamakazee’s from Saipan all competed for the title.
D’Chef’s Kitchen executive chef Rico Delos Reyes was adjudged the winner for his three-course menu: local beef broil using fresh Tinian beef with grilled cheese and mushroom filling; a traditional local beef soup with vegetables in an Italian minestrone cooking style, and a simple beef steak with a red wine reduction sauce.
For the cha-cha competition, island tunes were performed by local music sensation Big Jay Selepeo.
No registration for this particular competition was required. Winners were chosen based on audience reaction.
The competition had two rounds, with three teams selected from the first round to compete in the second and final round.
Team “Kaiyaki” won the contest and received a $100 cash prize.
As for the “Biggest Catch” Fishing Derby, Lucky Harvest won the top prize with a 772.5-pound marlin catch.
This year’s festival sponsors are the Marianas Visitors Authority, Marianas Variety, Docomo Pacific, the Office of the Governor, Marpac, Tan Holdings, RNV Construction, Roil Soil Clothing, Hong Ye Corporation, Pacific Trading, and Tinian Shipping.
