THE federally funded infrastructure projects that will turn the Tinian commuter terminal into an international airport are moving forward, according to a report by Commonwealth Ports Authority board member Barrie Toves.
Toves, who chairs the CPA board’s airport facilities committee, has submitted a list of Tinian airport projects funded by the Divert Airfield lease agreement for which the CNMI received $21.6 million from the U.S. Department of Defense.
On top of the list is the improvement of Tinian airport’s arrival and departure terminals, including the processing booths, office and restrooms, the expansion of the federal inspection services area, the installation of counters and in-line baggage system for the Transportation Security Administration’s processing and operations, office space, inspection areas and other miscellaneous work that will incorporate TSA and U.S. Customs Border Protection in the Tinian commuter terminal.
Toves also reported that CPA has already executed an agreement with Pacific Engineering Group & Services for architectural and engineering design services.
The other Tinian airport projects include the construction of two hangar-type warehouses for CPA equipment, food and beverage space improvements, tour bus parking, and the expansion of a parking lot for which the contractor, Tropex Garden, has already submitted shop drawings, and the actual construction should start once the permits have been issued to the contractor.
