Toribiong and his entourage briefly made a stop in the Philippines on their way back to Palau from a Taiwan trip.
The president said Romulo, in behalf of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo apologized for the Philippine Head of State cancelled trip to Palau.
“He said that President Arroyo cannot visit Palau due to other commitments,” Toribiong said.
In the short meeting Romulo and Toribiong discussed issues involving Philippine workers in Palau.
Workers from the Philippines are the biggest foreign worker labor force in Palau.
There are over 5,000 Philippine nationals employed in Palau.
“I assured Romulo that foreign workers in Palau are well taken cared of according to the contracts and laws of Palau,” he said.
In the brief meeting, he also told Romulo the contribution of Filipino workers in Palau’s development.
Prior to his stop in Manila, Toribiong was in Taiwan as one of the guests at the 2010 World Freedom Day Celebrations in Taipei last Jan. 21 to 24.
The World Freedom Day celebration featured a number of special activities, including an exhibition of photographs and an international academic symposium.
More than 60 representatives including prominent political leaders and scholars from around the world are expected to participate in the event.
Toribiong said he also met officials of the Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan.
