Toribiong presses MOE to add healthy lifestyle curriculum in schools

In a letter to Education Minister Masa-aki Emesiochel the president said that until now the formation of the committee to create healthy lifestyle curricula which was created through an executive order.

He said that his executive order on the matter has been issued almost one year ago.

“You are reminded that the Ministry of Education is required to appoint three members of the Committee. Please do so immediately if you have not already appointed your members,” the president stated.

He said that he expects the model curricula to be created and implemented this coming school year.

The next school year will be in September.

The Micronesian Chief Executive leaders adopted the PIHOA resolution which declares a”regional state of health emergency” because of the “epidemic of non-communicable diseases in Guam and Pacific island countries.

The Association members include American Samoa, Guam, CNMI, Republic of the Marshall Islands andPalau. The resolution was adopted last month to call attention to the high levels of chronic diseases among residents in these areas.

Palau, the most common causes of death is related to non-communicable or lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, gout, asthma, cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

The president said this way the students at a young age are aware of the disease and how it can be prevented.
