House Bill No. 8-2-1, HD1, SD2 amended the former statute in accordance with the constitutional provision. The new law now sets the salary of lawmakers at $50,000 a year.
The bill stemmed from the Constitutional Proposal 2-257, changing the manner in which the members of the 8th Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK) from a fee per session type of compensation.The new bill changes it to an annual salary rather than per session fee.The bill said each members shall receive a salary of $50,000 per year and that the compensation compensation shall be paid according to rules and procedures to be promulgated by the OEK.Toribiong signed the law on Feb. 6, and in his letter to the OEK leaders he said that the normal 15-day review period “allowed my office within which to act has been waived in order that salary payments to your esteemed colleagues in the Senate are expedited.”
