Toribiong to lead delegation to Pacific Arab Summit

The president in an interview clarified that he will not be attending the next Chief Executive Summit in the Commonwealth of Northern Marianas Island which is scheduled at the same time with the Pacific Arab summit.

He will be represented by Minister of Resource, Development and Tourism Harry Fritz in the CNMI summit scheduled from June 23 to 25.

UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan had invited foreign ministers and/or representatives of more than 30 Arab and Pacific states to the summit.

The Arab nations have invited at least eight countries in the Pacific to discuss issues such as renewal energy, investment and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The summit will be held in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

The meeting will be between the League of Arab States and the Pacific such as Solomon Islands, Samoa, Palau, Nauru, Tuvalu, Fiji, Micronesia and Marshall Islands are among the countries which are expected to send a representative.

Palau’s Representative to the United Nations, Stuart Beck, and President’s Special Assistant Ngirai Tmetuchl will be accompanying Toribiong in the trip.

Last year, the UAE launched the Pacific Islands Partnership Programme to build and strengthen its relations with the Pacific.

The Partnership programme has been designed to facilitate meaningful cooperation between UAE and the Pacific.

According the meeting will discuss aspects of cooperation between the League of Arab States and the Pacific island states as well as efforts to lobby support for Arab causes in international circles.

The meeting is the culmination of efforts being made by the UAE to facilitate cooperation between Arab countries and the Pacific nations.

In February of this year, the Sheikh toured the South Pacific region in February this year.

The summit in Saipan meanwhile is a meeting among chief executives ofPalau, the CNMI, Guam, Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and its states, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae will again meet to discuss key priority development initiatives for the region and to reach consensus on implementation priorities.

The leaders are also expected also to delve on quarantine standardization, Micronesia Challenge, extradition treaties and laws, maritime surveillance operation, airport improvement program, fiber optic cable, global environmental facility, immigration and labor, federal financial assistance, postal service, prior service, Pacific Plan, trade related issues and maritime boundary treaty.

Palau will then host a meeting of the top leaders of the Freely Associated States – the Marshalls, the Federated States of Micronesia and Palau.

The meeting is scheduled tentatively on July 29.
