Trading Up: A dual enrollment program for career pathways

(NMTech) — The Northern Marianas Technical Institute and the CNMI Public School system have successfully certified 89 students upon the completion of CNMI PSS school year 2022-2023 through their dual enrollment Trading Up Program in Construction and Hospitality.

Twelve students from Tanapag Middle School — 6 eighth graders, 5 seventh graders and one 6th grader received their nationally recognized credential in National Center for Construction Education and Research Basic Construction Safety — part of CORE Fundamentals, a prerequisite to all construction-related curricula at NMTech.

Five Da’ok Academy students also received their national credential in CORE fundamentals, 4 of whom were awarded at their high school graduation ceremony at the multi-purpose center on June 4, 2023. Upon completion, Da’ok graduates are now enrolled in Construction Craft Laborer Level 1as they continue their journey in their post-secondary education.

A mix of 72 sophomores, juniors and seniors will be receiving an American Hotel and Lodging Education Institute or AHLEI certification today, Thursday, June 15, 2023. AHLEI is also a nationally recognized certificate in the hospitality industry.

Initially, the target population for Trading Up: Construction was aimed at recruiting high school students. However, recruitment efforts in construction careers were not so enticing for this age group. A pilot project with middle school students from TMS was then coordinated and successfully implemented resulting in 12 certified students out of the 17 who signed up.

The NMTech-PSS team is currently working on coordinating the transition of these students into high school and/or into other NMTech programs to ensure that their career pathway journey continues.
