(Press Release) — Since June 2020, the United Carolinians Association Board of Directors has been meting to discuss and implement a community project geared toward supporting local entrepreneurship. To this end, and in collaboration with the Carolinian Affairs Office and CNMI Women’s Association, they are launching Project Liffang, with a kickoff date on Saturday, March 20, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carolinian Utt in Garapan.
Felicidad Ogumoro
According to UCA Economic Development Committee Chair Felicidad Ogumoro, “In our community today, and particularly as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, many of our people who were already living below the poverty line prior to the pandemic, have lost their jobs or have had drastic reductions in their household income. UCA proposes to pool our resources together and share with our suffering families — via Liffang. Liffang, a Refaluwasch term, means ‘give away.’ In line with this philosophy, we are launching Project Liffang — a way of providing support to members of our community who are significantly affected by the current Covid pandemic crisis in our community.”
Project Liffang will gather interested individuals (through a signed agreement) who are willing to sell or share whatever items or goods they have at a nominal price. The benefit will be to the seller, who is hoping to make money to sustain their basic necessities, and supporting the buyer’s ability to afford items, goods, or commodities at an affordable price. Project Liffang will provide an initiative to help our people to enhance their home-gardening and farming skills while also providing them the venue to market their home-products.
UCA President Frank Rabauliman further stated, “We are excited to showcase community vendors who have signed up to take part in our first event. UCA hopes the success of this program will provide additional long-term self-sufficiency for our people.”
