University of Guam program director ‘jailed’ in Palau

According to Valentino Kloulechad, the school’s fundraising committee chairman, they organized a game in which individuals suspected of wrongdoing were arrested and detained in a makeshift prison cell for the duration of the festivities or until they posted a nonrefundable bail.

Rengiil, according to Kloulechad, was wrongly accused of promoting the cultivation of an invasive species of fish in Ngermeduu Bay, a marine protected area.Designated “police officers,” without conducting proper and appropriate investigative measures, arrested Rengiil, a longtime supporter of the school and a member of its board of directors.“No one knows who masterminded his ‘arrest,’ ” Kloulechad said. “However, a horde of people rushed to post his bail, the amount of which has not been disclosed.”Kloulechad said whoever made the accusation against Rengiil pushed the limits of the game and nearly turned a festive event upside down.He said if it were not for Rengiil’s sense of humor and his ability to make the best of a bad situation, “we would all have been slapped.”Kloulechad, on behalf of the fundraising committee, apologized to Rengiil, who, jokingly said: “It is nice to know that there are still people who care for the environment. I was jailed for a good cause.”
