University releases new 2024 calendars for fishers, gardeners

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The University of Guam has launched two calendars for this year, focusing on facts and tips for fishing and planting.

The UOG Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant, along with the Guam Green Growth initiative, led the annual project, connecting the United Nations Sustainability Goals with the CHamoru culture.

“At UOG, we take pride in crafting practical tools and resources, exemplified by these two calendars. While they serve as handy planners, they go beyond scheduling, offering valuable insights into our diverse fish species and the cherished traditions of family fishing,” UOG President Anita Borja Enriquez said in a press release from the university.

Calendars are available for free while supplies last.

The 2024 Guam Tide Chart Calendar: Family Fishing Edition highlights the island’s fishing community, prepared by Guam EPSCoR, the UOG Marine Laboratory and National Science Foundation including SEAS Islands Alliance Guam.

The calendar can be found at Big Hook, GMI Scuba Wholesale, Liquid Soul, Fa’nui, Axe Murderer Tours, Coral Reef Marine Center, MDA and the UOG Sea Grant office.

The 2024 Guam Grower’s Calendar: Fanha’aniyan Manåmon Guahån, created in collaboration with Guahån Sustainable Culture, features a different local fruit or vegetable each month, listing the English and CHamoru names, characteristics of the crop and gardening tips.

The calendar can be found at G3 Makerspace & Innovation Hub at Chamorro Village and Guahån Sustainable Culture.

Each month of the tide chart calendar contains tide chart data, based on Apra Harbor, prepared by the UOG Guam Marine Laboratory, as well as a monthly feature of fishers with their catch of the day, scientific and CHamoru name of their catch and sustainability tips.

“We invite the community to enjoy our newly released 2024 Guam Tide Chart Calendar and the Guam Grower’s Calendar. While you enjoy the fish and plants throughout the year, also learn more about the intrinsic connection between island sustainability and our culture,” Austin Shelton, director of the UOG Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant, said in the release.

Both calendars were funded by the Governor’s Education Assistance and Youth Empowerment Grant program, according to the release.
