UOG ROTC commissions two sons of Saipan

(UOG) — In a ceremony at the Guam Army National Guard Assembly Hall, the University of Guam’s ROTC program commissioned Dan Ryan Tumaquip and Gavin Pangelinan, both of Sapian, as second lieutenants in the United States Army on Saturday, May 21.  Both Officers are graduates of Saipan Southern High School.

The commissioning ceremony is the culmination of the ROTC program that the Cadets undertook while studying at the University of Guam.  The cadets developed their leadership skills in the ROTC classroom and field training environments, and the hall-mark of the ROTC curriculum is the real-world application of the leadership instruction.  The cadets participated in numerous paid summer internships and military training courses throughout the world (as well as annual field training exercises and cultural exchange events) to hone their abilities to lead people in challenging environments.

Both Pangelinan and Tumaquip became second lieutenants in the active duty Army. As part of the ceremony, the cadets also were assigned their branches, or military specialty, with 2LT Pangelinan becoming a military police corps officer and 2LT Tumaquip earning his Commission as a quartermaster corps officer. The officers started their college experiences at Northern Marianas College before transitioning to the University of Guam to finish the ROTC program and commission.

Lt. Col. Thomas Anderson, the professor of military science at the University of Guam, described 2LTs Pangelinan and Tumaquip as “exactly what the Army needs in its young Officers.  They are tough and intelligent, while also exhibiting humility and compassion. They will both be excellent officers.  It has been my great privilege to mentor them over the last several years.”

UoG’s ROTC program was established in October 1979 and is celebrating 40 years of producing dynamic leaders for Micronesia, the Pacific, and the United States of America. Anyone interested in joining the ROTC program should send an email of introduction to [email protected] or call (671) 858-ROTC.
