During the visit, Chin met over 60 Palauans and was assured by the workers that they are being treated well by the company.
Chin in a statement said that the owner of the company, as well as the Mayor of Postville, gave Chin a tour of the facility and hosted a lunch in his honor.The statement said that the Postville is a remote town of about 2,300 people in northeastern Iowa.The meat packing company uses the latest state-of-the-art equipment in processing kosher meats such as beef and chicken.Chin said there are other nationalities working in the company such as South America, Somalia and several European countries.“That the working conditions were satisfactory and that the company was helping its employees in adjusting to working in the United States by advancing money to them for food, clothing and furniture,” Chin said.He added that it “was a good thing for both the employees and the company.”Chin said that he received assurances from the company that it would keep a line of communication open with the Palau government and assist the Palauans working there to be comfortable in their new environment and to be successful in their new jobs.The Palauans living there, Chin said that they were making the adjustment to their new home and work situation without difficulty and that they appreciated him coming to visit them.
