Wrestler gets scholarship from Toribiong

Elgin Loren Elwais is leaving tonight for California to study at the Lassen College.

Toribiong will shoulder his trip and his college education as well as his board and lodging.Elwais arrived in Palau from Beijing on August 27.He said he was walking on the road on Tuesday when called by Toribiong.Toribiong asked him to get inside his office and once he got there, Toribiong told him that he personally picked him to be his scholar.Toribiong told him that he would send him to school in the States.Toribiong said that Elwais qualified for a four- year course in Lassen College, California.The Presidential candidate said he is proud of Elwais and he believes in him that’s why he wanted to help him get a college education.Elwais in an interview said that he was “shock” and at the same time was happy of the scholarship.“I’m shock because I did not expect it. I don’t know why I was chosen but I’m happy because I’ve been really planning to enroll there,” he said.The wrestler said he has not made up his mind about the course that he is going to take up.“I have not decided yet but maybe, something to do with arts like architect because I want to be an architect someday,”he said.Elwais is the youngest of five siblings. He has been playing wrestling since 1999.He took up mechanics at the Palau Community College and studied for one year until he stopped schooling to compete in Beijing.He said he has been to different places to compete and to represent Palau. He has won several medals for wrestling competitions.He stayed in Korea in 2004 until 2006 for training.He said while in California, he will continue with the training in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
