HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A woman not wearing her seat belt and appearing to be under the influence of drugs was arrested following the alleged discovery of methamphetamine in her purse, according to a magistrate’s complaint filed in the Superior Court of Guam on Saturday.
The charging document contains allegations that during a traffic stop on June 19, Alice Elizabeth Cruz Cabales, 45, was displaying behavior that police believe is consistent with being under the influence of narcotics.
“The officer observed Cabales to have a combination of red and brown sores on her face and chest that Cabales kept picking at. The officer also observed Cabales’s eyelids trembling and what appeared to be white spots at the corner of her mouth,” the complaint states, further noting she spoke “in a fast manner and her eyes were darting around rapidly.”
The observations by police led to a subsequent consensual search of the vehicle Cabales was driving. According to the complaint, methamphetamine was allegedly found in her purse, which was on the passenger seat.
“Cabales claimed ownership and gave the officer consent to search it. A search of Cabales’s purse yielded a clear resealable baggie containing a white crystalline substance suspected to be Methamphetamine,” the complaint states.
Police said as they searched the purse, Cabales “jumped in place and threw her hands in the air while stating, ‘I knew I was being set up, she put that in my purse.'”
Cabales was reportedly referring to a woman she said was her “cousin” and identified only by her first name, “Jennifer.”
“Cabales said she was with Jennifer when Jennifer asked to stop by a friend’s house in Sinajana. Cabales stated she knew Jennifer was there to buy dope. A male approached the vehicle and collected $40, which was split evenly from Cabales and Jennifer, and then walked away before returning with half a gram of meth,” the complaint states.
According to police, Cabales claimed that the drugs found in her purse were “planted.”
However, the complaint highlights that Cabales’ statements conflicted “with her previous statements of knowing they were there to purchase meth and splitting the money to purchase meth.”
The allegations led to Cabales being charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled substance as a third-degree felony.
Cabales, who has no prior arrest record, was released on a $3,000 personal recognizance bond.
