3rd annual NMI 10km Women’s Run set for March 11

THE 3rd annual NMI 10km Women’s Run will be held on Saturday, March 11, with host Northern Marianas Athletics adding a 5km distance to this year’s edition.

The Saipan Marathon race course on Beach Road will be used, and the event is open to all female competitors.

Aside from the usual 10km distance for age divisions of U18 to 65 and up, there will be a 5km race and a mixed female/male 5K fun run/walk.

Males will be allowed to join the 5k mix fun run/walk but must use a pram or stroller to run or walk, strictly for fun and support and not as competitors.

“As part of strategic priorities set out in 2022, which are part of the…objectives [of] World Athletics, we have set specific actions in 2023 which focus on having more people, more fans, more participants and more partnerships,”  Northern Marianas Athletics General Secretary Robin Sapong said.

“In celebration of Women’s Month  and the International Women’s Day 2023, we decided to add more events to attract more participants,” he added.

Sapong believes that there will be  a great turnout this year. “For the past two years, the in-person events have had over 100 participants. So yes, for sure we are expecting a bigger turnout this year.”

With the assistance of NMA’s partners, which include World Athletics,  he said they will once again use the One Time Timing Chip system for results.

“We will also seek Run Saipan’s support so we can utilize their shoe tags to reduce the impact on our environment as they can be reset and reused for a span of two years,” Sapong said.
