BBJ Fitness Corner | Creating consistent habits

TO ensure success, an athlete must adhere to a strict maintenance training schedule, said Jerry Diaz, a certified National Academy of Sports Medicine personal trainer.

“We all ask the same questions,” he added. “How to begin? What is the right amount of training? How many times should I train?”

As for Diaz, he said “the most important question I ask my clients is, ‘What is your fitness goal?’ ”

He said it is easy to recommend various training exercises, but “that conventional training mindset is long gone.”

The modern approach, he added, is safer, productive and meaningful. It aims to help each individual create a habit of training each day based on the individual’s fitness goal, Diaz added.

He said fitness training must include a consistent amount of training volume, rest, nutrition and a proper daily schedule.

Diaz also tells his clients not to overwork by squeezing all training programs in one day.

“It is important to build a habit of creating a schedule that focuses on an efficient amount of strength and conditioning,” he said. “This allows proper blood flow and also allows the body to adapt to each movement while staying safe.”

Over time, the body’s system will adapt to the movements and resistant challenge to allow the individual to increase the amount of training time and exercise resistance to avoid plateau and boredom, Diaz said.

Nutrition should be treated the same way, he added.

Diaz said individuals must stick to a consistent nutrition approach while avoiding extreme or yo-yo dieting that usually results in up-and-down weight loss and frustration.

Diaz said the best approach is to gradually and consistently follow a realistic training schedule and nutrition plan that will set you up for success while giving you room for trial and error.

“It is important to start small while keeping your fitness program simple as you create consistent habits,” he added.
