IN his younger days as a CNMI basketball player, Jerry Diaz said he sought quick results by following the latest fitness and diet fads.

He said he soon learned that only a consistently maintained and appropriate health program can lead to meaningful fitness results.

Now a certified National Academy of Sports Medicine personal trainer, Diaz said he learned from his basketball coach Rufino Aguon to trust the process and take it day by day.

Diaz was told that the results would show overtime — not today, not tomorrow, not next week.

He  applies the same concept to his clients.

He said each individual can reach their fitness goal through regular exercise and proper nutrition

“Sometimes, we want to follow the latest trend which promises  quick results,” Diaz said. “However,  ‘quick results’ may cause a yo-yo effect that can lead to frustration and an unbalanced internal system.”

He said a training regimen that doesn’t match an individual’s current fitness level will also lead to unsatisfactory results which may include injuries.

In addition, an individual must avoid overtraining or skipping days due to loss of interest, Diaz said.

As for individuals who want to follow a strict and healthy diet, they must determine if it is financially sustainable or enjoyable, he said.

“For example, if an individual used to eating a 2,000-calorie diet with or without exercise begins following a 900-calorie diet, then that individual will feel lean and skinny, but that can also lead to fatigue and not having enough energy which may lead to mood swings and frustration,” Diaz said.

“A fitness nutritionist and personal trainer will look at an individual’s current fitness level and eating habits to create a fitness program that is healthy and safe for that individual,” he added.
