Chung, Wang advance to Girls Singles 14 tennis finals

IRIN Chung and Hoo Wang won their semifinal matches on Sunday and will face each other in the Girls Singles 14 championship of the 2021 Tan Siu Lin CNMI Junior Tennis Tournament at American Memorial Park.

In the semis, Chung went toe to toe with Savita Sikkel who had vanquished Anne Lee 6-0, 6-0 in their quarterfinal match.

Chung proved to be a tougher opponent for Sikkel who lost 2-6 in the first set.

Sikkel tried to remain in contention, but she had no answer to Chung’s variety of offensive and defensive techniques, eventually losing 3-6 in the second set.

Hoo Wang’s semifinal opponent was Anna Jieun Kwon.

Wang seized control early in the match and was relentless in her 6-3, 6-2 victory against Kwon.

In the losers bracket, Anne Lee and Isa Nishitani played against each other like they were vying for the championship

Lee took a  big hit in the quarterfinals, and her thirst for redemption was evident as she nearly silenced Nishitani 6-1 in the first set.

But in the second set, Nishitani turned the tables to force a tie-breaker.

Fortunately for Lee, she managed to regain focus as she again executed each return with precision, causing Nishitani to commit a costly error that gave Lee victory, 7-6(4).
