ANDREAU Galvez, along with Nathan Guerrero and Janelle Pangilinan, brought home championship trophies after defeating their adversaries in their respective categories during Friday’s finale of the TakeCare Badminton Open Tournament at the Ada gym.
In the A Men’s Singles, Andreau Galvez faced Joseph Torres in the championship round.
Their first match was played in the semifinals and it was extended to three sets. At first, Torres had the upper hand as he excelled in high-paced action. Defensively, Galvez kept up with the aggressiveness of his opponent, but Torres’ continuous attacks eventually got the better of Galvez who lost the first set, 10-21.
In the second set, Galvez shook off the jitters and proceeded to bombard his opponent with constant smashes that overwhelmed Torres who went down in defeat, 12-21.
Galvez rode the momentum into the third set, beating Torres 21-15 to advance to the finals.
Relegated to the loser’s bracket, Torres fought his way back to contention by outlasting Lance Gallardo 21-14, 20-21, 21-10 to face Galvez once again and this time in the championship.
Torres went all out to win both sets 21-11, 21-16 and force a winner-take-all match.
Both players fought hard in their do-or-die encounter, but Torres failed to control his strength and precision, overshooting his returns out of bounds to hand Galvez a first-set win 21-18.
In the second set Torres established a lead, but once again he made crucial errors that allowed Galvez to catch up and win the set, the match and the championship 21-20.
