KAGMAN High School and Dandan Middle School shared the spotlight in the throwing events of the 2020-2021 Annual Public School System-McDonald’s Middle School/High School Athletics Championships held Friday and Saturday at the Oleai Sports Complex.
In the U18 boys division, Kagman High School clinched two of the three throwing events thanks to the arm-strength of Francisco Kumuch.
In the discus throw, Kumuch covered a distance of 31.86m to land on the top spot. In second place was Tinian’s Matua San Nicolas who threw a distance of 29.34m while Agape Christian School’s Bobby Bao was third with a distance of 29.33m.
Kumuch continued his reign in the javelin throw where he recorded a whopping distance of 39.01m. In second place was Marianas High School’s Tyrik Basa (34.67m) followed by Hombre Hocog (32.15m).
Kumuch not only displayed arm-strength, mobility and flexibility, but his leaping ability also served him well in the long jump, covering a distance of 5.66m. Coming in second and third were Tinian’s JC Guintu (5.62m) and ACS’ Li Antonio (5.50).
The only event in which KHS did not place first was the shotput. This time, Tinian’s Matua San Nicolas was numero uno with a distance of 11.89m while ACS’ Bobby Bao (11.21m) settled for second place and KHS’ Francisco Kumuch (11.07m) placed third.
U14 boys
In the U14 boys division, the schools were evenly matched.
In the shotput, Tinian’s Keith Nabors took first place with a distance of 12.13m, beating schoolmate Mefi Norech (11.26m) and Dandan Middle School’s Jaydon Faisao (10.79m).
SIS took the podium in discus throw thanks to Casey Chambers who covered a distance of 26.55m followed by Tinian’s Marcial Patio (24.55m) and school mate Keith Nabors (24.55m).
In the javelin throw, Tanapag Middle School’s Keahie Omapas topped the charts with a distance of 33.14m while Chacha Middle School’s Luke Lizama (31.46m) settled for second place and Dandan’s Jaydon Faisao (31.08) placed third.
In the long jump event, Dandan’s Nolan Nate took the top spot by a hair with a distance of 4.97m, edging Grace Christian Academy’s Jasper Hall (4.94m) and Joseph Pangelinan( 4.8m).
Girls division
In the U14 girls division, Dandan Middle School ruled all throwing events.
Starting in the shotput, Dandan’s Patty Mendiola earned first place with a distance of 7.78m. Following behind were Tinian’s Ha’ani Salas (6.98m) in second place and ACS’ Ruth Zhang (6.59) in third.
Mendiola continued to display her strength by topping the discus throw with a distance of 15.50m, beating Saipan International School’s Yuky Claveria (14.65) and Dandan’s Ha’ani Passi (14.45).
Mendiola earned her third consecutive gold medal in the javelin throw marking a distance of 18.25m while Chacha Middle School’s Ellycin Aguon (16.33m) took second place and Phoenix Gross (15.55m) placed third.
In the Long Jump, ACS’ Ruth Zhang shined covering 4.14m to take first place over Dandan’s Ha’ani Passi (3.82m) and Tinian’s Ha’ani Salas (3.68m).
U18 girls
In the U18 girls division, Tinian’s Cheraline Epity clinched first place in the shotput event with a distance of 7.95m. She was shadowed by MHS’ Kina Rangamar (7.50m) and SIS’ Angellyn Roligat(7.45m).
In the discus throw, KHS’ Maria Rasa led the pack with a distance of 23.40m beating MHS’ Angellyn Roligat (20.50m) and Kina Rangamar (17.95m).
In the javelin throw, SIS’ Soleil Lamar stunned the competition with a distance of 22.31m to notch the top spot. MHS’ Angellyn Roligat (20.84m) finished second while KHS’ Maria Rasa (20.72m) was third.
In the long jump, ACS’ Sally Wu topped the event with a distance of 4.63m followed by SIS’ Soleil Lamar (4.47m) in second place and MHS’ Leani Acosta (4.30m) in third.
