Lina Tsukagoshi wins U15, U19 badminton titles

LINA Tsukagoshi won the U15 and U19 division titles in the Northern Marianas Badminton Association’s Tan Holdings Cup at the Ada gym over the weekend.

In the U15 girls singles championship, her skills were unmatched against Shaina Malonzo.

Tsukagoshi dispatched Malonzo in the first set with quick returns and a strong defensive presence, 21-9.

In the second set, Malonzo picked it up a notch but her efforts were still in vain as Tsukagoshi maintained efficiency and eventually took over, 21-11, to claim the championship.

Tsukogoshi earned her second title in the girls doubles event as she partnered with Danielle Snaer to edge Fredericka Herman and Offeia Yordy, 21-19, 21-19.

Joining the podium finish  for the U15 division titles were Johnson Xia who defeated Evan Seguritan 21-16, 19-21, 21-18 in the boys singles; Xia and Alick Zhao who slipped past Seguritan and Jihun Park, 16-21, 21-21, 21-19 in the boys doubles; and Danielle Snaer and Xia who bested Tsukagoshi and Frank Li, 21-14, 21-20 in the mixed doubles.

Tsukogashi collected her second individual title by outplaying Terresa Ahn in the U19 women’s singles.

The first set was marked with back-to-back action, but  Tsukagoshi’s accuracy and aggression eventually proved too much for Ahn who lost 13-21.

In the second set, Tsukogashi routed Ahn, 21-6.

Tsukogashi earned another title, this time with her teammate Snaer when they outlasted Ahn and Shemariah Hicaro, 21-18, 21-20, in the women’s doubles event.

For the U19 men’s singles title, Kyle Salcedo bested Ian Lubao, 21-15, 14-21, 21-19.

But Ian Lubao did not leave the court empty handed as he paired with Salcedo to bag the U19 boys doubles title by defeating Daniell Pablo and Brian Lubao, 21-17, 21-18.

Ian Lubao earned his second title with Ahn by trouncing Brian Lubao and Prapti Mondal, 21-12, 21-14, in the mixed doubles.
