10 volleyball coaches pass Level 1 certification exam

Tomas Santamaria, Federation Internationale De Volley-Ball instructor and secretary of Coaches Commission of the Asian Volleyball Confederation, conducted Level 1 Certification training, which involved a series of physical training.

Accordingly, the training concluded with a written examination.

One of the women coaches said the exam lasted for about one hour, and the test consisted of 50 questions.

Santamaria said the volleyball coaches have been very receptive to ideas and instructions during the entire course of the training.

Laurie Peterka, one of the participants, said, “We started with 17 who signed up to complete the course.”

She added that the initial number of participants dwindled as the course progressed, until their number dropped to 10.

The 10 participants held their graduation rites at the beachside of the Pacific Islands Club last Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Out of the 10 volleyball coaches who participated, one was from Guam, while the rest were from the island.

The 10 who were able to complete the training and pass the exam are the following: Tyce Mister, Marianas High School teacher; Mili Saiki, Saipan International School; Russ Quinn, Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association beach volleyball coach; Laurie Peterka, NMIVA president; Mark McDonald, MHS Physical Education teacher; Joe Taijeron, volunteer coach for Mt. Carmel; Tamiko Winkfield, Saipan Community School; Christopher Shepherd, athletics director at St. John’s in Guam; Gabriel White, Federation of International Basketball Association referee; and Kim Peterson, co-coach for volleyball at Saipan International School.
