16th Annual Mahi-Mahi Derby set for Dec. 12

Originally scheduled for March, the event had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The SFA, however, pushed through with the 36th Saipan Annual International Fishing Tournament in July.

“After a successful international event, and a good enough response, we decided to hold the mahi-mahi derby early next month,” SFA solicitation chairman Curtis Dancoe said.

He said the SFA will continue to comply with the government’s safety guidelines when holding fishing tournaments.

Dancoe said the SFA is anticipating the participation of about 60 boats in the mahi-mahi derby.

He said fishermen would not have to go far as it is close to mahi-mahi season already. “It is going to be a lot of fun,” he added. “The mahi-mahis will be close and hopefully the weather will be good.”

Registration starts on Friday, Dec. 11, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Smiling Cove Marina.

The 16th Annual Mahi-Mahi Derby will be a one-day event from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. with three categories. Winners will receive plaques and cash prizes.

“Keep an eye on the weather and check the SFA’s Facebook page for more information and updates.” Dancoe said.
