Right off the bat team 40 grabbed the lead away from the 45’s during the first ten minutes of the game. 2010-2011 Memorial Cup Masters Basketball’s MVP Martin Moreno readily showed his basketball talent on the court once more after bringing in 8 points for the team.
The 40’s then fabricated an immovable barrier against the 45’s to keep them at bay. The 40’s Romeo Verano ended the first quarter with a jump shot to clutch the lead from the 45’s.
At the bottom of the first quarter the 4o’s were ahead by 7 points, 19-12.
The 45’s stepped it up a notch upon entering the second quarter of the game. They were able to steal the lead away from the 40’s pushing past them by two shaky points after Bruce Berline connected to the basket for 8 points while teammate Sonny Ebuen nailed 6 points for the team to turn the tables around in their favor at 33-31 by half time.
Both teams entered the second half of the bout ready to play some ball. But the 40p’s refused to come in second to the 45’s during the third quarter.
Team Captain Yosh Gabaldon scored two three pointer shots to bring the 40’s even with the 45’s after three minutes of the game passed by.
Moreno then chipped in his four pence whilst teammates George Masga and Romeo Verano let the jump shots and lay ups rain connecting for 5 points and 4 points respectively to put the lead back in their hands by 8 points, 54-46 by the time the siren rang to seal the third quarter shut.
Both teams anticipated the last quarter of the game and gave it their all. But the 40’s were deemed supreme and unstoppable. Geroge Masga helped his team sail to the winning end of the game after collaring 10 points in the final round of the game.
This was enough to defeat the 45’s by 6 points, 74-68 and to move on to the final competition tonight against the 35A Division at the Gilbert C. Ada gymnasium at 6 pm.
