9 teams in as Budweiser league kicks off today

With this year’s theme, “Basketball, It’s What Do” the Budweiser League hosted by the Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands will provide each teams custom-made uniforms.

During the media day last week, BANMI and MARPAC representatives presented all the nine teams along with their coaches and managers.

Coach and managers picked the first two teams that will see action for the 52-game season.

Each team carries a Budweiser brand name. And the excitement among teams mounted as seedings were set to determine which one of the ten Budweiser brand team names they would have the honor of playing for.

The teams that are playing in the 2010 Budweiser League are Budweiser Saints, Bud  Rollers, Beck’s Six Seven Oh, Bud Light CNMI Nationals, Michelob Ultra Sixers, O’Doul’s Runnin Rebels,     Barcardi Mojito Hi-5,  Bud Light Lime Ol’ Aces and Hoe Gaarden IT&E.

“BANMI has gone the extra mile for this year’s participating teams,” league commissioner Gabriel White said.

“We’re not just naming teams with Budweiser’s famous brands, they’re gonna look like them too,” he added.

He also said that during the media day “everyone was in awe” of the custom-made uniforms that the teams will have this season.

The teams, White said will battle it out in the round-robin regular season, double-elimination playoff-finals format for the top three cash prizes.  The top players will also benefit from their hard work on the floor for cash prizes in six statistical categories- rebounds, assists, steals, blocked shots, scoring and three-point field goals made.

Even the top coach this season will be chosen to receive a cash award for their strategic efforts.

White gave team coaches and managers update on BANMI’s continued efforts to improve the CNMI’s basketball community.

He stated that with the cooperation of the Division of Sports and Recreation, BANMI has been hard at work to give the Ada Gym another facelift for everyone who uses it.

Last Saturday, BANMI installed professional floor decals to enhance the image of the gym.

“This is not just being done for the Budweiser Basketball League.  BANMI is making this possible for basketball in general for everyone as part of its strategic development plans,” White said.

For these reasons, Budweiser Basketball League Teams were given a little more breathing room to get set for this season.  Games which were to begin this
