Alley-Oopsie Daisies’ Antonette Labausa takes the floater over Swish Kebabs’ Marlene Lumabi in the women’s division championship game of the Marianas Arsenal 3×3 Series on Saturday at the Ada gym
THE Alley-Oopsie Daisies claimed the women’s division title of the Marianas Arsenal 3×3 Series after slipping past the Swish Kebabs, 16-15, on Saturday at the Ada gym.
The Alley-Oopsie Daisies consisted of Irish Pagarao, Cassandra Camacho, Kina Rangamar and Antonette Labausa, while the Swish Kebabs team was composed of Marlene Lumabi, Angellyn Roligat, Sylvina Simram and Kaithlyn Chavez.
In the championship game, the Alley-Oopsie Daisies focused on the inside game with Pagarao orchestrating the onslaught as the main ball handler and feeding Rangamar and Camacho while attacking the rim herself whenever possible.
The Swish Kebabs, for their part, relied more on the long-range approach. Despite the Alley-Oopsie Daisies’ high-percentage shots from within the perimeter, the Swish Kebabs managed to stay within reach thanks to the reliable shooting of Lumabi, who took over the highlight reel by draining four consecutive three-pointers.
However, with each missed shot by the Swish Kebabs, the Alley-Oopsie Daisies capitalized with defensive rebounds that denied second-chance buckets. Labausa then joined the fray with two crucial makes to keep the Alley-Oopsie Daisies afloat by two points, 15-13.
During the game’s final minute, Swish Kebabs evened the score thanks to Roligat, but Alley-Oopsie Daisies’ Pagarao delivered a point to give her team the lead, 16-15.
The Swish Kebabs had the possession, but they failed to score and had to settle for defeat.
“It always feels good to win,” Labausa said. “We formed a team just for this month — I’m not sure if we will compete in the next tournament. But I like how the younger girls are learning to play with each other. They’ve grown in their game and are a lot faster than us older ladies so sometimes we have to play smart against them. It was a good tournament.”
