BANMI to send NMI kids to basketball camp in Turkey

The camp will be from Aug. 24 to Aug. 31, the time Turkey will also be hosting the World Basketball Championship for Men.

The NMI, according to BANMI will send one boy, one girl, and one coach to the camp. All expenses — air fare, food, and lodging — will be provided without charge.  Participants will need only personal spending money.  BANMI will select the participants who will represent the Northern Marianas.

The Children of the World is a social and cultural basketball project that will bring together teenagers from around the world.  Most of FIBA’s 212 national basketball federations are expected to participate, so the Camp will offer an unforgettable experience for the participants.   Campers will get to meet their basketball friends from Turkey and around the world, and learn about different cultures and make new friends.

Campers will be housed in dormitories, in a campus setting which has canteens, outdoor and indoor courts, swimming pools, and areas for social activities.  There will be 3-on-3 tournaments and basketball clinics led by coaches from the USA and other countries.  Campers will get to attend games of the 2010 World Championship, visit the exciting city of Istanbul, and participate in many other activities.

The camp is not necessarily for top-level players.  It is enough that participants have fun playing basketball, have basic knowledge of the game, want to develop themselves, and have the personality that can make them good ambassadors for the CNMI.

Boys and girls who want to be considered must be 14 years of age this year — that is, born in 1996.  They must be US citizens, and hold a US passport valid at least until the end of this year.  And they must be active in the sport of basketball.

Coaches who want to be considered must be 34 years of age or younger, and can be male or female.  They must also be US citizens, and hold a US passport valid at least until the end of this year.  They must also be active in the sport of basketball, and should preferably hold a coaching certification from BANMI.  The coach selected will be committed to working with youth basketball players in the future.

Interested boys, girls, and coaches should submit an application, containing the following information:  full name, gender (male or female), date of birth, telephone number, email address, a list of all languages you speak, a copy of the photo page of your US passport, proof of CNMI residency (school or employment records), a brief history of your participation and accomplishments in the sport of basketball, a short essay — not more than 250 words — telling BANMI why you think you should be selected to represent the CNMI at the camp, and how you will make use of your experiences when you return to the CNMI.

All applications must be submitted by email to BANMI at this address:  [email protected].  The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, June 4, at 5 p.m.

Applications which are incomplete or submitted late will not be considered.  BANMI will be the sole and final judge of all matters relating to applications.

For further information, contact BANMI by email, at the above address.  No telephone calls please. (PR)
