Beginners get head start in coed soccer

The first half of Saipan coed soccer that started on Feb. 1 and had its final kick last April 9 drew a total of 137 players, with the beginners getting their first soccer experience with advanced players.

Six teams each mixed with neophytes and mentors completed the successful first half of this year’s season.

Red team is captained by Catherine Anderson; Green Team, by Rob Epley; Blue Team by Hee Jae Lee; Orange Team, by Mel Borja and Purple Team by Jersh Angeles and Yellow Team by Maria Ornes.

“It was a great half of the season,” says Spring Kick coordinator, Jhie Vallo, adding that since each teams are mixed with advanced players the games went competitive.

As the season went by, games became “more controlled” but the spirit of fun and fair play kept coming out from each teams.

Who wins most of the time was not emphasized as players just went on to enjoy the field with respective opponents.

The best thing about it is that team works were developed and sportsmanship was there every end of the game.

The organizers noted that with the number of new players joining the league, the soccer family on Saipan will continue to grow.

There are soccer groups on island that new soccer enthusiasts can get themselves involved.

And coed soccer is a good start. Team mates and captains are ready to help them understand the game.

“That is one of reasons we wanted to keep the Saipan Co-ed Soccer. Because there are a lot of people out there, and they just want to play soccer,” Vallo said.

Vallo wants to thank everyone especially the referees and captains for all the hard works and dedication. She also announced that Spring Kick’s second season will run in 10 weeks from April 19 to June 25.

“There might be some slots for those who didn’t make it on the first-half, so we will see,” she said.
