BOMBA and the Spike Girls are off to a strong start in 4 Starz Marianas Club’s 2nd Annual Fall Fest Volleyball Tournament 2025, as they came out victorious in their debut games at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium on Monday night.
The men’s division saw a rematch of last year’s tournament finale, with defending champs Bomba taking down runner-up Hammahz, 25-19, 25-17.
The game was intense, as both teams filled each set with nonstop action.
In the first set, Bomba played the role of aggressors as they drew first blood with a devastating spike by Seth Hong and Bernard Villagomez. They were just as productive on the defensive end, countering incoming spikes with well-timed blocks to seize the early lead.
After finding their footing, Hammahz began a rally with Mokyang Kim and Kubo Anthony at the frontline, delivering back-to-back spikes, while Theo and DJ Joab denied entry with defensive blocks and bump returns to close the distance.
As the set progressed, however, Bomba’s chemistry clicked, and the rest of the team joined the action. John Justo, KC Nuyles, and Jermaine Salas contributed to the offensive run with diving spikes, precise sets, and powerful finishes, eventually overwhelming Hammahz, who faltered with unforced errors and miscommunication, allowing Bomba to secure the first set, 25-19.
Bomba carried that momentum into the second set, quickly establishing control once again.
Although Hammahz had their share of highlight plays, they continued to struggle on the defensive end and had no choice but to accept defeat at the hands of Bomba, 25-17, solidifying the defending champs’ first win of the season.
Women’s division
In the women’s division, the Spike Girls reigned supreme in a three-set battle against the Heatwave Hitters.
In the opening set, the Heatwave Hitters seemed to find their groove as they controlled most of the possessions. Rhodalyn Zandueta orchestrated attacks with well-placed sets, capitalized by Aaleyah Fatialofa and Genicia Tyquiengco, whose spikes and early returns led to a 25-19 win.
The loss only fueled the Spike Girls, who came back in the second set prepared. Instead of utilizing all three touches, the team opted for quick returns and unorthodox spikes to catch the Heatwave Hitters off guard.
Despite the Heatwave Hitters closing the gap, they struggled with overpowered returns and defensive errors, giving the Spike Girls the edge to even the match, 25-19.
In the decisive third set, both teams left it all on the court, but as the dust settled, the Spike Girls emerged victorious over the Heatwave Hitters, 15-11.
Co-ed division
In the co-ed division, Team Angry Penne bested Gecko in straight sets, 25-21, 25-16.
