Located in Japan’s Tottori Prefecture, the race will feature a three-kilometer swim, 145-km bike ride, and 42.195-km run.
This will be Carey’s fourth time to compete since last year, where she finished third in the women’s division at nine hours, 56 minutes, and 38 seconds.
“I feel ready to join,” the pro triathlete said in an email to Variety.
Carey said that the Kaike competition is longer than her usual races. The bike course alone is equivalent to 90 miles and is longer than Saipan’s 100-km premier cycling event, the Hell of the Marianas.
“I have been changing my training to prepare for the long race,” she stated. “At the beginning of my training, my body was really tired from three hours of running and four to six hours of biking. Now I feel much better and almost ready.”
Carey suffered knee problems since the Ironman triathlon but is improving.
“Since I’ve been doing so many different kinds of races — mountain bike, triathlon, and half triathlon — I just want to finish this long, long race. That is my goal every year. You never know what happens especially when the race takes around 10 hours. Even if you feel great on the bike, you still have to run 42.195-km. I just want to go to the finish line and represent Saipan,” she said.
Mieko will leave next week Friday, July 15 and stop by Korea before heading to Japan.
She thanks Taga Inc., Asiana Airlines, the Kaike triathlon’s associates, IT&E, and Brabu Pharmacy. She also thanks Lewie Tenorio for training with her and her husband, Kevin Carey for his support.
