Docomo prevails in championship series

Jun Estolas and Elmer Esdrelon led the Docomos to victory, beating the Ferrera Builders 90-83 in the fourth quarter.

The Docomos had the edge in the second quarter with a 15-point lead. Estolas was off to a rough start with only seven points in the first half. He had a long way to go, clashing with nearly all Ferrera players in the defense. Esdrelon hammered three-pointers along the way, sinking nine easy points.

Moving up by only 12 points, the Ferreras were in trouble at the second half. A disappointing 102-100 loss last Wednesday gave the team no options but to win their game. Slow progress took place as Luis Abuel, Andy Mortos, and James Abuy free throwed their way in the third quarter for seven extra points. Ponce Rasa tried landing three-pointers to tie the game but failed.

Team Docomo thrived on the Ferreras’ misses, as Edwin Santos and Larry Sharry dominated the rebounds. The joint forces of Ron Gamboa, Estolas, and Esdrelon gave the Docomos full control of both the front and backcourt.

A three-point field goal from Ferrera’s James Abuy and two consecutive lay ups from Rasa swiftly boosted their team, improving 67-63 in the final quarter. Both teams came neck and neck in the scores as the frustrated Ferreras missed their chances of leading the game. Out-of-bound violations from Abuel and Rasa kept the Docomos alive, in addition to their 13-point free throw streak in the match’s final minutes. Docomos’ Melvin Villarin blocked a jump shot from Mortos while Rasa took his fourth personal foul from his collision with Gamboa. In an effort to burn time, Esdrelon and Gamboa took turns passing the ball.

Docomos’ Marvin Deocares earned an extra trophy for ‘Best Coach’ while Larry Sharry was declared the ‘Finals MVP.’ Also in their roster are James Lee, Manolo Manalo, Sam Fernandez, Emir Abuan, Amor Casabuena, Jerry Diaz, Anthony Wencesalao, Jun Galzote, and Jun Tabora.

As part of the tournament, team Docomo walked away with the tournament’s $1,500 cash prize while the Ferreras won $500 in prizes.

Abuel and Esdrelon capped the game with 22 points apiece, while Estolas scored 17.
